    • What is Fighting Spirit?

Fighting Spirit (FiSpi for short) is my newest project, and is a wrestling career game. You control a single character, and take him through all the matches and events of his career. It is scheduled for a late 2004 release. The price has not yet been decided.

What relation is this game to TEW?

FiSpi is set in the same fictional game world (the "Cornellverse") as Total Extreme Wrestling, one year in the future from where TEW2004 left off. Unlike TEW, FiSpi is not meant to simulate the real wrestling world, instead it is a hybrid of realism and fantasy. For example, matches in FiSpi are not pre-determined, they are fought as real contests. However, like the real world, the backstage relationships that you form can mean the difference between being given main event matches and being made to wrestle on the pre-game show. TEW and FiSpi are not compatible.

      What style is the game?

The game is text based like TEW, but with a greater emphasis on graphics. The major difference between FiSpi and TEW is that while TEw was a simulator, FiSpi is a game. While there is still a great deal of emphasis on statistics and depth, the overall feel is more of a fun game than serious simulator.

Have the problems which TEW had been addressed?

Yes. The game uses only around half of the memory that TEW did (11k compared to 22k), and the loading times are considerably faster. The testing process has also been changed, to concentrate more on the practical aspects of the game, which is where the testing of TEW was flawed. Furthermore, several members of the board will be invited to play an advance copy a few weeks before the official release, so that any problems with installation or system specifications can be addressed.

      What games modes are there?

There are three game modes. The first is Exhibition Match mode, where you can pit wrestlers against each other; this can be done against either another human or against the computer. The second mode is the "full" game, titled "Rookie To Legend". You begin by creating a new character, and take him through an initial training camp. You then control his career, and try to take him from an unknown rookie to international superstar. The last mode is "Supertar Mode". This is the same as "Rookie To Legend", except that you can choose to begin as an existing superstar. This means that rather than have to work your way up from scratch, you can use a character who is already well known.

What do you do during a career?

The main part of your career is finding work, and actually wrestling. You can approach federations to try and get jobs, or sometimes they will approach you with offers. Once you have chosen who you want to wrestle for, and signed a contract with them, you will then be added to their roster. They will book shows, and you will be given matches to wrestle. Wrestling allows you to become more famous, and also to develop your skills. The more famous you become, the more you will be able to earn, and the better fighters you will face. The better you skills, the more you will win. That is the main part of the game, however there are lots of other things going on. You can interact with other wrestlers backstage, deal with injuries, have financial difficulties...all the things that real wrestlers go through.

How different will each match by?

Very. Wrestlers not only have individual move sets that make them unique, but they also fight in radically different styles (all of which are customizable). Fighting a cruiserweight? Expect him to spend most of his time in the air, hitting you from every side with high risk attacks. Fighting a former MMA competitor? Expect him to take you down to the mat and beat you down with stiff blows and painful holds. Fighting a wild brawler? Expect chairs and tables to come into play. One feature of matches that people might like is that there is audio play-by-play to compliment the on-screen display. What's more, this is fully customizable by the player, so that they can record their own commentary.

      How detailed is the game?

There is a huge database containing an awesome amount of depth. Every single move in the game can be customized, from changing the name to writing custom play-by-play. Every worker can be individually tailored, not only with the normal statistics like name and size, but down to the level where you can define exactly what his offensive style will be down to what percentage of the time he will use top rope moves, and define exactly what moves he has at his disposal.

      How customizable is the game?

Extremely. Not only can almost every piece of data in the game be altered via the in-game editor, but virtually everything is skinnable, allowing the player to alter the look and sound of the game to whatever he wants. What's more, rather than having to manually swap files around whenever you want to use a new database, like you had to with TEW, FiSpi does this automatically. So you could have the original database, your own custom database, and one you've downloaded from someone else, and you can swap between them with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Are you taking suggestions for features?

No suggestions are being taken as the game is already in the beta testing stage.

      Will there be a trial?

Yes, there will be a trial version of the game. This will be the same as the full game, except that there will be limits to how long your career can last, and some features will be turned off.

Does this mean TEW2005 is not going to happen?

No, not at all. The current plan is that TEw2005 will go ahead next year, after Fighting Spirit has been released.

      Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuund

This is not a full feature list, but should give you an idea of what you can expect. I'll be updating it occasionally.

      Basic Premise

You take control of a professional wrestler and try to guide him through his career. This includes wrestling his matches, negotiating contracts, keeping personal finances, dealing with injuries, and surviving backstage politics.

      Match Features

      * Realistic opponent AI. Wrestlers fight in a natural manner. Lightweights do come off the top rope at regular intervals. Technical workers will tie you up in knots on the mat, and try to squeeze you into submission. 500lb giants will simply batter you with strikes and slams.

      * Varied move sets for workers. Each worker can have a huge amount of moves, spread over different categories: strikes, grapples, corner, ground, air, rebound off the ropes, and rope moves (planchas and springboards). This gives wrestlers very unique offensive choices no matter where they are in the ring (or outside).

      * Realistic simulation of physical condition. Working body parts has a very real affect on the match. Working a wrestler's legs will not only soften him up for submissions, but will also make him unable to utilise any of his own moves that rely on leg strength.

      * Realistic simulation of time. As the match progresses, wrestlers get tired, and they start to make more mistakes. The speed of their weakening is based on their stamina levels, meaning highly conditioned professionals will have major advantages over fat out-of-shape brawlers as the match goes on.

      * Match statistics - At any point in the match you can view an amazing array of stats, from the percentage of time you've been on the attack, to how many of each type of move you've attempted, to the amount of counters you've done. You can also view a log of every move, counter, and action performed so far, so you can see where your weaknesses are.

      * External factors can play a big part in matches. Ref bumps? Chairs? Tables? Blood? Run ins? Pre-match attacks? All included.

      * Audio play-by-play and individual move pictures. Matches have both sound and graphics (both customizable), adding to the atmosphere of each match.

      Career Features

      * Training - Define exactly how you want to train, meaning you can customize exactly where you want your character to focus his efforts, perfecting the areas you want to perfect.

      * Morale - your character has wants and needs, which you must satisfy. If he becomes too unhappy, he'll leave wrestling, ending your career. These include things like financial needs, meaning that you may need to make tough choices about where you work in order to pay the bills!

      * Backstage - talk to other wrestlers before the show; form friendships, make enemies, get into fights, or keep to yourself.

      * Politics - The relationships that you form can affect how your career is shaped. Strong allies can get you opportunities you'd never get otherwise, while enemies can be out to screw you over.

      * Try-out matches - promotions may give you a match to prove yourself worthy. Feel the pressure as you engage in a make-or-break match with a superior opponent!

      * Look for work - you can approach promotions to look for work, or they can come to you if you're in demand

      * Creative meetings - call a meeting with the company to discuss your creative direction, such as requesting managers, feuds, or new tag team partners.

      Game Features

      * Exhibition match feature - play against a friend or the computer with any worker in any style of match.

      * Much reduced memory usage from its predecessor TEW - around 50%

      * Extremely quick loading times between days

      * Fully active game world - every promotion in the world continues doing business, regardless of whether you work for them or not. Wrestlers will move around, have matches, win titles, making a constantly evolving game world for you to play in.

      * Full in-game, easy-to-use editor, which can be used to edit just about everything in the game

      * Skinnable screens - almost every single graphic in the entire game can be customized by the user

      * Unlimited number of save games

      * Multiple databases at once - no more swapping files around manually, you can have unlimited databases attached to FiSpi at the same time, and swap between them with just a few clicks of the mouse.

      * Full match history for every wrestler in the game

      * Full title history for every belt and wrestler in the game

      * Full results history for every promotion in the game

      * 7 different game areas: USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, UK, Australia and Europe
